Working with Partners to provide a Vehicle Adaptation Service for the elderly and/or infirm.
Transfers are an important process so necessary for living life yet fraught with difficulties. Transferring from bed into a wheelchair alone poses many challenges for transferor & transferee alike.
Positioning of the wheelchair, height of bed to wheelchair, traction of surface, lightning, familiarity of surrounding, distractions etc. are some important aspects to consider. Failure in just one aspect could trigger a catastrophic event like a fall and/or even serious physical injury to the person assisting.
By nature, outdoor transfers carry even more risks for there are many factors which cannot be controlled or eliminated but requires adaptation.
Vehicular transfers are a very necessary part of modern life even for wheelchair bound individuals.
While there are options for wheeling a wheelchair directly into a transporter but this can be expensive in the longer term.
There are also options for modification and/or adaptation to most ordinary family vehicles. Adapted vehicles facilitate physical transfer of the patient into a vehicle seat. The wheelchair is then folded & transported in the boot space.
Vehicular transfers are about risks mitigation & in order to lessen mishaps, a good sense of the surrounding & how to adapt is crucial.
Transferring into a car seat provides for a better ride. When a wheelchair is strapped in a transporter, every bump & turn will make the wheelchair ‘rock, roll & tip’ no matter how well it is strapped in. The movements can make a wheelchair user feel nauseous & the ride, uncomfortable.
When there are options for a wheelchair user to transfer into a proper car seat, transferring is the most comfortable option to travel.
